Netherlands Netherlands

The EGA is delighted to announce a strong line-up of players for the 2025 Continent of Europe Vagliano Trophy Team.

The eight selections will defend the trophy against Great Britain & Ireland, at Royal Hague Golf & Country Club, The Netherlands, on 27 and 28 June.

Selection to play in the prestigious biennial match, which has a storied history dating back as far as 1931, recognises the players’ outstanding achievements in their amateur careers so far.

THE SELECTIONS:

Sara Brentcheneff (FRA)

Emma Kaisa Dalgaard Bunch (DEN)

Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio (ESP)

Carolina Lopez-Chacarra Coto (ESP)

Marie Eline Madsen (DEN)

Paula Martín Sampedro (ESP)

Rocío Tejedo Mulet (ESP)

Camille Min-Gaultier (FRA)

Rocío Tejedo and Cayetana Fernández are the only two selections to have played in the last edition of the biennial match in 2023 at Royal Dornoch. However, three of the selections – Bunch, Lopez-Chacarra and Madsen, represented Europe at the Patsy Hankins Trophy against Asia-Pacific in January and will wear the colours of Europe for a second time this year.

Paula Martín Sampedro, Camille Min-Gaultier and Sara Brentcheneff will be making their first appearance on a European team. The Spaniard will nevertheless be the highest ranked player on the squad, currently sitting in 7th position in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Sampedro also just won the Women’s Amateur Championship in Scotland and will arrive in The Netherlands full of confidence to represent the European team.

Following solid performances, Camille Min-Gaultier will join her fellow French compatriot Sara Brentcheneff to complete a great team of promising golfers. Sara Brentcheneff has yet to reach her 18th birthday and will be the youngest player on the team. A former PING Junior Solheim Cup participant, Brentcheneff has been one of the top performers in Europe so far this year with podium finishes at both the Portuguese and Spanish international amateur championships. The French junior has also impressed in LET Access Series tournaments, winning the Super Bock Ladies Open in Portugal last month.

In the parallel match, the last pick who completes the European team for the Junior Vagliano Trophy is Adriana Garcia Terol. She joins the three other Spanish players already selected in the team, and with two wins and one second place finish in the past two months, Adriana seems to be on a hot streak to defend the European team.

EXPERIENCED CAPTAIN RETURNS

Ane Urchegui García will return to captain the team for a second time. The former European Mid-Amateur Ladies’ Champion and Junior Vagliano Trophy captain led the side to victory at Royal Dornoch, Scotland in 2023.

“I am very honoured to be Captain of the Continent of Europe women’s team for the second time alongside some of the best amateur players in the world” said Urchegui García.

“I have great memories of the past editions as captain of the Vagliano and Junior Vagliano Trophy teams in 2017, 2019 and 2023”.

“We will carry the same goal into this year’s match, enjoyment of the moment, friendship, gratitude, sportsmanship, discipline, motivation, teamwork, and love for golf. That is the best recipe to fight for the prestigious Vagliano Trophy”.

Urchegui García will have the task of leading the continent’s top players to what would be a record-extending winning streak, which dates back eight editions to 2007.

ROYAL HAGUE TO HOST EUROPE’S TOP AMATEUR WOMEN AND GIRLS

Typically ranked among the best courses on the continent and the top-100 in the world, Royal Hague Golf & Country Club will set the stage for both the Vagliano and Junior Vagliano Trophy matches this year.

Designed in 1938 by famous architects Harry Colt and C.H. Alison, the layout meanders through large and naturally undulating dunes. Just three kilometres from the coast, the Continent of Europe teams’ home advantage could be mitigated by the course’s distinct links character which may be more familiar to the visiting team.

Although the club is no stranger to hosting prestigious amateur events, such as the 2018 European Amateur Championship, the matches at the end of June will be the first between the Continent of Europe and GB&I to be held at the historic Hague course.

ABOUT THE VAGLIANO TROPHY

The Vagliano Trophy is a biennial match played between eight-player teams from the Continent of Europe and Great Britain & Ireland. The EGA selects the Continent of Europe team, while the GB&I side is selected by The R&A.

The Vagliano Trophy was presented by André Vagliano to the French Golf Federation and the Ladies’ Golf Union in 1931, originally for an annual match between Great Britain and Ireland and France.

From 1949 to 1957 Great Britain had also played a biennial match against Belgium. In 1959 the two matches were replaced by one with Britain playing a team representing the Continent of Europe, the Vagliano Trophy being used for the new event.

The match takes place over two days. Four foursomes matches in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon are played on both days with 24 total points available to the teams.

The contest is jointly organized by the European Golf Association and The R&A. The EGA selects the Continent of Europe side, while the GB&I team is chosen by The R&A. Identical matches between the two regions also exist for men (St Andrews Trophy), boys (Jacques Léglise Trophy) and junior girls (Junior Vagliano Trophy), the latter of which will be contested in parallel in the Netherlands.

Many star names have featured on both sides of the match in the past, including Linn Grant, Céline Boutier, Sophia Popov, Caroline Hedwall, Anna Nordqvist, Leona Maguire, Georgia Hall, Catriona Matthew and many more.

Since 1959, when the match was first played between the Continent of Europe and Great Britain & Ireland, the score is 16 to 15 in favour of the continent, with one match halved. However, the Continent of Europe currently holds a record eight-match winning streak which dates back to 2007.
