Round 2 of the 2025 European Mid-Amateur Championships was played under sunny conditions with light winds at Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club in Portugal.
After 36 holes, the 143 players have been cut to 54 men and ties and 33 women and ties, with just one round remaining.
KOGL TAKES CONTROL
Christoph Kogl (AUT) has taken a commanding lead in the European Mid-Amateur Men's Championship. Starting the day in second place, the Austrian carded a 68 (-4) in Round 2 at Quinta do Peru, Portugal. Kogl impressively played his first 13 holes today in -6, but then dropped three shots in the next three holes. He was able to bounce back with a closing birdie at the 18th to get to -7 for the tournament.
He'll take a five-shot lead into the final round, ahead of an international top-10 which features nine different nationalities, and will look to become the second consecutive Austrian to win the event tomorrow.
The only other player to sign for a round as low as 68 today was Keijo Jaakola. The Finnish player's four-under-par round catapulted him up the leaderboard from 19th to second place with and to a total of -2. Ireland's Stuart Grehan will join them in the final group on Saturday on the same score, after a 70 (-2) in Round 2.
It's still all to play in the fight for the podium however, with eight players within four shots of second place.
TIGHT AT THE TOP IN THE WOMEN'S EVENT
There's a sense of 'deja vu' at the top of the women's leaderboard this evening. The current top four players in the European Mid-Amateur Ladies' Championship are the same as this stage at last year's tournament in Latvia. in 2024, Alexandra Farret (FRA) came from behind in the penultimate group to clinch victory in what was an extremely tight finish.
This year, the defending champion will start in the final group, alongside compatriot Pauline Stein, who signed for a 70 (-2) today, and Aideen Walsh, after all three players finished the second day with a total score of +3.
Jessica Ross (IRL) will be just one shot behind heading into the final 18, although has momentum on her side. The Lahinch Golf Club player bounced back from an opening 78 to card the tied lowest round of the day, a 70 (-2), and get back into contention.
