Hansson and van der Sluijs Selected for Continent of Europe Teams

The EGA is delighted to announce two final selections for the Continent of Europe Jacques Léglise and Junior Vagliano Trophy teams.

Albert Hansson (SWE) will join eight boys previously selected, while Lynn van der Sluijs (NED) becomes the sixth and final player on the girls’ team.

The two players will look to help the Continent of Europe teams to victory against Great Britain & Ireland at Blairgowrie Golf Club, Scotland on 26 and 27 August.

Albert Hansson triumphed at The R&A Boys’ Amateur Championship last week, adding his name to a trophy which features the likes of José María Olazábal, Matt Fitzpatrick and Sergio Garcia. After making the cut by a single stroke, the Swedish player won five consecutive matches to earn a spot in the 36-hole final with compatriot, teammate, and friend, Didrik Ringvall.

Three-down with just eight holes to play at Carnoustie, Hansson turned the match around down the closing stretch. The 18-year-old won five of the last seven holes to secure a 2&1 victory and the biggest title of his young career.

Lynn Van Der Sluijs impressed at The R&A Girls’ Amateur Championship last week. The Dutch international finished in the top-10 of the stroke play qualifying against a strong field but suffered a narrow one-hole defeat in the second match play round.

Last month, the 16-year-old finished runner-up in the English Girls’ Under 16 Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship and helped the Netherland’s to fifth place in the Nations’ Cup of the European Young Masters.

ABOUT THE JACQUES LÉGLISE TROPHY

The Jacques Léglise Trophy is an annual junior boys match played between nine-player teams from the Continent of Europe and Great Britain & Ireland.

The match takes places over two days, with four foursomes matches on both mornings, eight singles matches on the afternoon of the first day, and nine singles matches on the afternoon of the second day. With 25 total points on offer, 13 points are needed to secure victory.

First played in 1958, the match was dominated by Great Britain & Ireland to such an extent that it was discontinued in 1966. It was rejuvenated in 1977 when Jean-Louis Dupont presented a trophy in memory of Jacques Léglise, a renowned French amateur champion and former President of both the EGA and the French Golf Federation.

A number of high-profile players have competed on both sides of the match in the past including José María Olazábal, Thomas Bjorn, Sergio Garcia, Luke Donald, Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland.

The Continent of Europe team is selected by the EGA, while the GB&I side is selected by The R&A.

About the Junior Vagliano Trophy

The Junior Vagliano Trophy is an annual junior girls’ match played between six-player teams from the Continent of Europe and Great Britain & Ireland.

The match takes places over two days, with three foursomes matches on both mornings and six singles matches on both afternoons. With 18 total points on offer, 9.5 points are needed to secure victory.

First played in 2011, the match is now in its seventh edition. The contest was created as a junior version of the Vagliano Trophy, which is an amateur ladies match between eight-player teams from the Continent of Europe and Great Britain & Ireland.

The match has historically been played every other year alongside its senior equivalent, although will now be played annually.

A number of high-profile players have competed on both sides of the match in the past including Solheim Cup stars Georgia Hall, Charley Hull and Emily Pedersen. European Ladies’ Amateur Champions, Agathe Laisne, Bronte Law and Alice Hewson all also competed in the junior version of the match before graduating to the women’s teams.

The Continent of Europe will look to extend its winning streak, having won all six editions of the match played so far.
