EUROPEAN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

Denmark and Italy fight for the first place in the 2020 European Senior Men's Team Championship

With a day of play cancelled, two rounds of match play were scheduled today for the playing of the 2020 European Senior Men's Team Championship at the Diamond Country Club in Austria.

In the morning matches for Flight A, competing for the upper placings, top seeds, Germany overcame a gallant effort of the 8th seeds, Switzerland. The main upset of the round came from Belgium's defeat of second seeds, Spain. Both Italy and Denmark had relatively straight-forward matches against the Netherlands and the home team, Austria, respectively.

In Flight B, the six-team draw had the top seeds, Czech Republic and Slovakia, with the bye. Luxembourg and Poland both defeated their respective opponents, Slovenia and Lithuania, to meet the top seeds in the afternoon, but they did no damage to their bids for the minor placings.

Flight A's afternoon match of the round saw a tight tussle between Germany and Denmark. With the foursomes going to Denmark, pressure mounted on Germany's single matches, with Ulrich Schulte (GER) clinching a 1 hole win over Kent Tonnesen (DEN), while the earlier singles match went into extra holes. Björn Norgaard (DEN) stole victory for the Danish team over Martin Birkholz (GER) at the 20th.

Meanwhile, Italy prevailed over Belgium, despite the latter's strong morning performance, Switzerland defeated Austria, and Spain made a clean sweep of the Netherlands.

Tomorrow's finals are:

Flight A: Denmark vs Italy (Germany vs Belgium for the bronze)

Flight B: Czech Republic vs Slovakia
