Day 1 Wrap: European Team Championships

07 Jul 2026

Day one of the 2026 European Team Championships is now complete. Over 500 players completed the first of two rounds of stroke play qualifying on Tuesday at five venues across the continent.

Highlights of the day included:

  • Finland battle the weather and still lead by a shot, at -9 despite nearly two hours of suspended play at the Men's Team Championship in Estonia

  • France open with a bogey-free 67 from Camille Min-Gaultier to take a three-shot lead at the Ladies' Team Championship in Ireland

  • Spain roar back from Division 2 relegation, hitting -18 in 40-degree heat at the Boys' Team Championship in Montecastillo

  • Only 11 players break par as Zürich's fast, sloping greens bite at the Girls' Team Championship

  • Frankie Morton's 65 is the round of the day, as England close to within three shots of leaders Spain at the Boys' Team Championship in Montecastillo

Teams have one more round of 18 holes to move up as far as possible in the stroke play qualifying leaderboard, with the top eight advancing to the medal-contention matches following Wednesday's play.

AMATEUR TEAM - ESTONIA

Leaderboard: Men's Team

Finland sit atop the leaderboard after the first day of stroke play qualifying, posting a team total of -9 to lead the way in windy and wet conditions at Estonian Golf & Country Club.

Play was suspended for nearly two hours around 11:00am after persistent overnight and morning rain left the course saturated, with several bunkers declared out of play and standing water threatening teeing areas, fairways and greens. Conditions improved through the afternoon, allowing the round to be completed without further interruption.

Sakke Siltala was the standout performer for the Finnish team, carding an individual score of -5 to help push his side clear at the top. The Netherlands sit second on -8, just one shot back, with Switzerland a further shot behind in third on -7. France (-6) sit fourth, ahead of England (-3) in fifth and hosts Estonia (-2) in sixth. Germany, level par, complete the top seven.

Below them, the picture is far tighter. Ireland hold eighth, the final spot inside the medal-contention Flight A bracket, on +2, level with Spain in ninth. Sweden sit 10th on +3, while Belgium, defending champions Italy, and Iceland, are all tied for 11th on +4. That leaves six teams within two shots of a Flight A place heading into Wednesday, setting up a tense second round of stroke play qualifying to determine who joins the leading pack.

LADIES' TEAM - IRELAND

Leaderboard: Ladies' Team

France set the early pace at PGA National Slieve Russell as last year’s runners up began their bid for a ninth European Ladies’ Team Championship title with an impressive six under par total.

Camille Min-Gaultier was the standout performer for the French outfit, carding a bogey free five under par opening round 67 to share the individual lead with Denmark’s Marie Eline Madsen in glorious conditions at the County Cavan venue.

Hosts Ireland also made a positive start, as Gillian O’Leary’s team opened with a one under total to sit fourth overnight, with Kate Dillon (Oughterard) the best of the Irish on day one.

Making her European Ladies' Team Championship debut, Dillon had the honour of leading out the home team on Tuesday morning as she teed up alongside Balma Davalos Guaita (Spain) and Sara Brentcheneff (France).  The East of Ireland Women’s Amateur Open Champion got the Irish off to the ideal start as she went bogey free to card a four under par round of 68 to set the home side on their way.

“Got out there early and got around quick so it was very nice,” said Dillon.

“No bogeys, which doesn’t happen very often, so I’m delighted with that. I love early tee times especially when you’re first, you can just race around. I don’t like waiting around and I’d be a pretty fast player, so I was delighted to get that time and take advantage of it.”

France will take a three-shot advantage into the second round, with Min-Gaultier (-5), Valentine Delon (-3) and Vairane Heck (-2) leading the way for Les Bleus as they look to avenge last year’s final defeat to Spain on home soil at Golf de Chantilly.

The most successful nation in the history of this event, England sit second after Sophia Fullbrook’s three under par round helped them to a three under total as they seek championship number 13 this week. Ten-time champions Sweden round out the top four taking third position at a combined two under par, one shot ahead of Ireland.

BOYS' TEAM - SPAIN

Leaderboard: Boys' Team

A scorching hot day in Spain that saw the thermostat close in on 40 degrees celsius led to a special heat protocol being applied at the Jean-Louis Dupont Trophy. That didn't seem to affect the standard of golf however, with 43 players breaking par on the opening day at Montecastillo Golf.

After bouncing back from Division 2 last year, the home nation have taken pole position in the stroke play qualifying. An -18 total was led by Gonzalo Baños, who finished his round with an eagle and two birdies for a 66 (-6).

England, looking to end a 22-year wait for the trophy this week, also got off to a good start and sit just three shots behind Spain on -15. Frankie Morton carded the score of the day with a 65 (-7) to help his team to a strong start. The Netherlands sit two shots further back on -13.

GIRLS' TEAM - SWITZERLAND

Leaderboard: Girls' Team

The opening day of stroke play was played in sunny conditions, with all 19 teams completing the first round on a course presented in outstanding condition at Zürich Golf & Country Club.

The fast and sloping greens proved to be a real test throughout the day, with just 11 players managing to break par.

The team leaderboard is extremely close after the opening round, with France leading at +1, followed closely by Germany at +2 and Spain at +3, setting up an exciting second day of stroke play.

Germany’s Lena Geier produced the round of the day with an impressive 4-under-par 68, including five birdies on the back nine, to lead the individual standings.
