2022 Continent of Europe Junior Vagliano Trophy Team Announced

The EGA selection committee is delighted to confirm five talented selections for the 2022 Continent of Europe Junior Vagliano Trophy Team.

The Junior Vagliano Trophy is an annual match between the top U16 girls from Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) and the Continent of Europe. Selection to play in the match recognizes the players’ outstanding achievements in their young amateur careers.

The Continent of Europe will take on GB&I at Blairgowrie Golf Club, Scotland on 26 and 27 August.

THE SELECTIONS:

Johanna Axelsen (Denmark)

Anna Cañadó (Spain)

Andrea Revuelta (Spain)

Perla Sól Sigurbrandsdóttir (Iceland)

Carla De Troia (France)

The team, to be joined by a sixth and final selection following the R&A Girls’ Amateur Championship next week, will be captained by two-time European Mid-Amateur Ladies’ Champion, Myrte Eikenaar for a second time.

“We have selected a great group of young players who have already played some wonderful golf this season in national and international championships.” Said Eikenaar ahead of the match. “It will, once again, promise to be an exciting contest against GB&I.”

“I look forward to watching the girls compete in Scotland later this month and for them to experience one of the most exciting matches of the year.”

All five players will make their first appearance for the Continent of Europe in Scotland at the end of the month.

Andrea Revuelta is the highest ranked player in the team. Inside the World Amateur Golf Ranking top-100, the Spanish player finished tied with the lowest individual score at the Toyota Junior World Cup in June, and recently finished in the top-25 at the European Ladies’ Amateur Championship.

The team also features recently crowned European Young Masters champion, Perla Sól Sigurbrandsdóttir, who became the first Icelandic player to win gold at the event two weeks ago.

The players will follow in the footsteps of the likes of Solheim Cup stars Georgia Hall, Charley Hull and Emily Pedersen who have all formerly competed in the match.

The Great Britain & Ireland team will be announced shortly by The R&A.

ABOUT THE JUNIOR VAGLIANO TROPHY

The Junior Vagliano Trophy is an annual junior girls’ match played between six-player teams from the Continent of Europe and Great Britain & Ireland.

First played in 2011, the match is now in its seventh edition. The contest was created as a junior version of the Vagliano Trophy, which is an amateur ladies match between eight-player teams from the Continent of Europe and Great Britain & Ireland.

The match has historically been played every other year alongside its senior equivalent, although will now be played annually.

A number of high-profile players have competed on both sides of the match in the past including Solheim Cup stars Georgia Hall, Charley Hull and Emily Pedersen. European Ladies’ Amateur Champions, Agathe Laisne, Bronte Law and Alice Hewson all also competed in the junior version of the match before graduating to the women’s teams.

The match takes places over two days, with three foursomes matches on both mornings and six singles matches on both afternoons. With 18 total points on offer, 9.5 points are needed to secure victory.

The Continent of Europe will look to extend its winning streak, having won all six editions of the match played so far.
