Smørum Golfklub successfully defended the European Men’s Club Trophy at Cabot Bordeaux on Saturday, producing a commanding performance to finish nine strokes clear of the field and claim a third title in four years.

The Danish trio of Daniel Toft, Mads Heller and Christian Photin Hansen finished on seven-under-par after 54 holes on the Châteaux course, the only team to end the championship in red numbers.

Their dominance was also reflected in the individual standings, where the three Smørum players occupied the top three positions. Toft claimed the individual honours on three-under-par, three shots ahead of teammate Heller.

Played from 22 to 24 October, the championship brought together Europe’s national-champion men’s golf clubs, with the best two of three scores counting towards each team’s total on every day. Heavy showers and, particularly in the second round, strong winds provided a demanding test throughout the week.

Smørum made a steady start with a one-over-par team total in the opening round, leaving the defending champions fourth and three shots behind joint leaders Eindhovensche Golf and Golf Club Am Habsberg e.V.

The championship shifted decisively in their favour on Friday.

With strong winds making scoring difficult, Toft produced an excellent three-under-par round and Heller added a one-under-par score. Their combined four-under-par total was five shots better than any other team managed on the day and lifted Smørum from fourth into a six-shot lead over Eindhovensche and Greensgate Golf Clubs.

Rather than protecting their advantage in the final round, the Danes extended it.

Photin Hansen led the way with a three-under-par round, while Heller once again signed for a one-under-par score. It gave Smørum a second consecutive team total of four-under-par, again the lowest score of the day, and completed an emphatic title defence.

Warrenpoint Golf Club produced the strongest challenge on the closing day. A two-under-par final-round total lifted the Irish club two places into second on two-over-par overall.

Eindhovensche Golf secured the bronze medals on seven-over-par, one stroke ahead of Golf de Terre Blanche. Olgiata Golf Club and Greensgate Golf Club completed the leading group on 10-over-par.

The victory adds another chapter to Smørum Golfklub’s impressive recent record in the championship, with the Danish club now having lifted the European Men’s Club Trophy three times in the last four editions.
