France Tops 2026 EGA Medal Table with Seven Gold Medals

30 Oct 2026

France has finished the 2026 European championship season at the top of the EGA Medal Table after claiming seven gold medals across the year.

The medal tables, which count all EGA European-titled championships in each calendar year, are finalised following the European Men’s Club Trophy, the last EGA championship of the season.

French players and teams collected seven gold, four silver and three bronze medals in 2026, giving the country 14 medals overall and a clear lead at the top of the standings.

France’s success began at the European Mid-Amateur Championships in Portugal, where Pierre Tillement and Pauline Stein completed a French double in the men’s and ladies’ events. Jordane Court added a third individual title at the European Senior Ladies’ Championship in Cyprus, before Tao Pemerika won the boys’ title at the European Young Masters and helped France to victory in the Nations’ Cup.

A golden year was completed by the country’s senior teams in September. France successfully reclaimed the European Senior Ladies’ Team Championship at BlackSeaRama in Bulgaria, while the men took advantage of home soil at Cabot Bordeaux to win the European Senior Men’s Team Championship.

The result marks a return to the top of the medal table for France, who finished fourth in 2025 after leading the standings with nine gold medals in 2024.

Spain finished second with three gold, three silver and one bronze medal. Remarkably, all three Spanish victories came during the same week in July, with the country winning the European Ladies’, Girls’ and Boys’ Team Championships.

England also claimed three gold medals to finish third. Charlotte Naughton won the European Ladies’ Amateur Championship in Sweden, Stephen Creed claimed the European Senior Men’s Championship in Cyprus, while England earned their first European Team Championship for Golfers with Disability title in Italy.

Germany matched Spain and England with three gold medals and finished fourth overall with one silver and three bronze. Tim Wiedemeyer produced a commanding performance to win the European Amateur Championship at Linna Golf, while Germany also claimed the European Mid-Amateur Ladies’ Team Championship and, through GC St. Leon-Rot, successfully defended the European Ladies’ Club Trophy.

Ireland rounded out the top five with two gold, two silver and one bronze medal. Their standout success came at the European Amateur Team Championship in Estonia, where Thomas Higgins secured the decisive point on the 20th hole of a dramatic final against the host nation. Ireland also won the European Mid-Amateur Men’s Team Championship in Austria.

Estonia enjoyed another landmark season, finishing sixth after Kristella Sikk won the girls’ European Young Masters title and the country’s men earned silver on home soil at the European Amateur Team Championship.

Denmark claimed the final gold medal of the EGA season, with Smørum Golfklub successfully defending the European Men’s Club Trophy at Cabot Bordeaux. The victory was the Danish club’s third in four years.

In total, 15 countries earned at least one European championship medal in 2026. The Netherlands collected four medals, while Austria, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Italy each earned two. Belgium, Finland, and Switzerland also featured on the podium during the season.

EUROPEAN TEAM SHIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The European Team Shield Championships, designed for small and emerging golfing nations of the EGA, have their own running medal tables as the events are not counted as European-titled categories.

The 2026 championships were staged at Royal Malta Golf Club, marking the first time the Malta Golf Association had hosted an EGA championship.

Türkiye claimed the ladies’ title after a closely fought final against the hosts, with Sude Bay securing victory on the final green. The result took Türkiye to five women’s Team Shield titles, moving further clear at the top of the all-time medal table.

Malta reversed the result in the men’s competition. After winning two semi-final matches in extra holes, the hosts again needed additional holes in the final before defeating Türkiye to claim their first men’s Team Shield title, having previously finished on the podium eight times.

Greece remains at the top of the all-time men’s Team Shield standings with five gold medals, while Malta’s victory moves them onto the list of championship winners.
