Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro is the venue for the 2025 St Andrews Trophy, as the Continent of Europe look to defend their title on home soil.

The opening morning, however, went the way of the visitors, who came close to securing maximum points in the session.

In the opening match, Tyler Weaver and Connor Graham claimed a 2&1 win to put Great Britain and Ireland in front. The English pairing of Luke Poulter and Charlie Forster followed suit, also winning 2&1 to extend the lead.

Stuart Grehan and Eliot Baker held a narrow advantage heading down the 18th, but a bogey meant they had to settle for a half against the Danish duo of Borregaard and Bressum.

The final foursomes match went GB&I’s way, with Cameron Adam and Dominic Clemons securing a 1-up victory thanks to a birdie at the last.

The afternoon singles proved far tighter. At one stage, with all matches on the back nine, all but one were either all square or within a single hole. It was the visitors, however, who managed to swing momentum their way.

After Weaver halved the top match with Alfons Bondesson, GB&I swept the next four points: Poulter won 2&1, Graham claimed a 3&1 victory, while Baker and Adam both recorded 4&3 wins.

Europe found some hope when France’s Hugo Le Goff posted their first full point of the day with a 2&1 win over Gavin Tiernan. Further wins for Weidemeyer and Borregaard narrowed the deficit to four points.

GB&I head into day two with an 8–4 lead, needing just five more points to reclaim the trophy.
