Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro and the Royal Spanish Golf Federation have been confirmed as hosts of the 2028 European Amateur Championship.
The prestigious event will take place from 28 June to 1 July 2028 at the Madrid venue, one of the most renowned and historic clubs in Spain, where many of the world's leading amateur golfers will compete for the continental title.
A Prestigious Championship
The European Amateur Championship is one of the flagship events in the international amateur calendar. Contested annually over four rounds of stroke play, the tournament consistently ranks among the strongest amateur events in the world according to the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
The championship also offers a significant reward, with the winner earning an exemption into The Open Championship.
Over the years, the event has attracted many of Europe's finest players during their amateur days, including Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Viktor Hovland, Tommy Fleetwood, and Ludvig Åberg, all of whom have either won the title or finished among the leading positions.
A World-Class Venue
Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro is widely regarded as one of Spain's most prestigious and traditional golf clubs. Featuring courses designed by Harry Colt and Robert Trent Jones Sr., the venue offers a classic and demanding test of golf, combining strategic design with immaculate conditioning.
The club has a long-standing history of hosting elite competitions, including the Spanish Open, Madrid Open, European Amateur Team Championship, Eisenhower Trophy and the Vagliano Trophy. More recently, it hosted the 2025 St Andrews Trophy match between the Continent of Europe and Great Britain and Ireland, and the Copa S.M. El Rey in 2026.
Located in Madrid, the course provides the perfect stage for the world's top amateurs, with its tree-lined fairways and well-guarded greens providing a challenging test.
Looking Ahead
The 2028 edition will mark the fourth time the event has been contested in Spain, following Parador de El Saler in 2022, and Real Club de Golf El Prat in 1995 and 2013.
The 2026 edition of the championship will take place at Linna Golf in Finland, followed by Ganton Golf Club in England in 2027.
