The 2025 European Mid-Amateur Team Championships are underway at Empordà Golf in Spain.
A field of 104 of the continent’s leading amateur players aged 25 and over has assembled to contest the Men’s and Ladies’ trophies in the second edition of this team event for the mid-amateur category.

After the opening round of stroke play qualifying, both Irish teams lead their respective tournaments. With the best three scores from each four-player team counting, Ireland posted 7-under-par in the women’s competition and 9-under-par in the men’s. If they maintain their positions after Thursday’s second round, they will secure the top seed for the match play stages. More crucially, a top-four finish guarantees a place in Flight A and a chance to compete for medals.

In the men’s championship, France closed day one in second place at 5-under, four shots behind Ireland. Hosts and defending champions Spain are a further three back, with seven nations within six shots of third place. In the women’s event, Germany (-2), Finland (par), and Austria (par) currently occupy the remaining top-four positions, while defending champions France sit fifth on +3.

The day’s standout individual performance came from Estonia’s Mattias Varjun, who signed for a 6-under-par 65 in the final group. His score might have been even lower but for a double bogey at the 17th and a missed birdie opportunity on the closing hole.
