European Amateur Championship

Four players share the lead after the first round

Despite a tough golf course awaiting the players for the first round of the European Amateur Championship at the Golf and Country Club Zürich, calm and overcast conditions provided some opportunities for good scoring.

The defending champion, Germany's Mattias Schmid, was one of the first to commence, but a slow start on the front nine saw him turn at +1. An eagle 2 at the short but potentially treacherous 10th spurred him forward and four further birdies brought his first-round salvo to -5.

This score was not to be bettered, but Gregorio de Leo (ITA), Casper Simberg (FIN), and Frederik Schott (GER) were all to stand equal with Schmid at the end of Day 1.

A further 30 players are grouped on par or better setting the scene for an exciting second day.
