Armstrong and Urchegui Garcia Win European Mid-Amateur Titles

Joe Armstrong has won the 2022 European Mid-Amateur Men's Championship at Golf du Médoc Resort. The French player started the day in a tie for the lead with Sweden's Jonas Wallmo on -3. Wallmo made a pair of birdies early in the round but a 1-over-par back-nine meant his challenge for the lead wouldn't materialize.

Day 3 Highlights - 2022 European Mid-Amateur Championships

Germany's Miko Apfel was Armstrong's biggest challenger in the final round. Starting the day two shots back, Apfel birdied the opening three holes to quickly close the gap to the front. Heading into the final three holes the German player was just one shot back of Armstrong, but dropped shots on 17 and 18.

Ultimately, a round of 69 (-2) and a total of -3 for the tournament earned him the silver medal in a tie for second with Wallmo.

Despite dropping two shots, Armstrong carded the lowest round (67, -4) of the day thanks to six birdies, one of which came on the final hole to cheers from the crowd. With a tournament total of -7, and a four-stroke victory, Armstrong becomes the first French player to win the event since 2013.

In the Ladies' Championship, France's Charlotte Guilleux held a two-shot lead heading into the final round over Spain's Ane Urchegui Garcia and two-time champion, Myrte Eikenaar (NED). The Dutch player struggled in the final round, faling out of contention with a round of of 77 (+6) which meant that Ane Urchegui Garcia was the only player able to keep pressure on Guilleux.

The French player managed to maintain her two-stroke advantage until the final hole. A dropped shot for Guilleux and a birdie for Urchegui Garcia meant a two-shot swing, and that a playoff was needed to decide the title.

A tap-in par from the Spaniard was enough to secure victory on the first playoff hole. Urchegui Garcia becomes the first Spanish player to win the European Mid-Amateur Ladies' title since its inauguration in 2019.
