More detailsHistory
The European Amateur Team Championship, first held in 1959, is one of the oldest tournaments in the European Golf Association's roster and is contested annually by 16 qualified teams. Since its earliest days, the tournament has featured a blend of stroke play and match play formats, and is currently contested across five days of competition.
The men's team event was the first European-titled amateur championship organised by the EGA, alongside the European Ladies' Team Championship more than 65 years ago. Nine nations contested the first edition, which was won by Sweden at El Prat, Spain. Participation by European countries has grown significantly since then, and in 2002, a Division 2 event was introduced.
The tournament was originally contested every second year up until 2008, when it moved to an annual frequency.
Many of Europe's biggest golfing stars represented their countries in the competition before turning pro. Notable former participants include Ludvig Åberg, Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer, Shane Lowry, among many others.
