Ireland dominates European Boys’ Team Championship, Divison 2, Stroke Play Qualification

The 2016 European Boys’ Team Championship, Divison 2, is played at Golf Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic, from 14-17 September, 2016. 

 

On the first two days, nine teams competed over two rounds of stroke play to decide the draw for the match play starting tomorrow. 

 

Ireland topped the qualifier with a total score of 728 (+8). John Murphy led the field with a total score of 141 (-3). Murphy was closely followed by Slovakia’s Pavol Mach with a score of 142 (-2). Three more Irish players placed in the top-5 demonstrating Ireland’s dominance.

 

Second place was taken by Iceland (751) closely followed by Slovakia (752) and Switzerland (754) in place three and four, respectively. All four qualified for Flight A, where the teams will play two foursomes matches in the morning followed by five singles matches in the afternoon on Day 3.

 

In tomorrow’s semi-finals Ireland will face Switzerland and Iceland is up against Slovakia in the race for the medals and the two promotion spots. The winner and runner-up teams of Divison 2 will be promoted to the European Boys’ Team Championship, which will be played at La Manga Club, Spain, in 2017. 

 

In Flight B, Estonia is straight through to the semi-final owing to its fifth place in the qualification. Its opponent will be decided in the morning’s quarter-finals: Hungary vs. Croatia and Turkey vs. Poland. The matches in Flight B will consist of one foursome and four singles matches.
