Campomanes and Morrow become 2016 European Senior Champions

Lausanne, 14th June, 2016: The European Seniors' Championship took place at Pula Golf in Mallorca, Spain, from 9th to 11th June, 2016. In great conditions, 144 senior golfers from 23 nations competed over three rounds of stroke play (with the cut after 36 holes) on the Spanish island.

In the men's competition Adrian Morrow (IRE) lead from start to finish although 2014 and 2015 champion Clive Jones (ENG) was challenging him till the last shot striving to make his hattrick complete. Morrow started with a 3-shot lead over Jones into the final round, but could not follow up his great performance of two rounds below par. With +5 for the day he left the doors open for Jones. The match being all square on the last tee, both fired their tee shot over the 18th green and found themselves left with a difficult chip after a free drop from the path. Morrow saved the par with a superb shot in front of a cheering crowd and Jones was not able to force him into a play-off. With winning the trophy and gold medal Morrow also took home the prize for the best player in the 60+ age category. Stating in his speech that this was "one last win for the old boys", Morrow referred to the new championship condition allowing men above 50 to participate, which was in place for the first time this year.  With the lowest score of the day (71) compatriot Karl Bornemann (IRE) got within two shots off the lead to secure the bronze medal in his first European Seniors' Championship.

In the European Senior Ladies' Championship the lead was always in Spanish hands. With 71 in the first round, the best score of the tournament, defending champion Maria De Orueta (ESP) took the early lead, but was replaced on the top of the leaderboard by compatriot Macarena Campomanes on Day 2. Like Morrow in the men's competition, Campomanes started with a 3-shot lead into the final day, but kept it exciting till the end with challengers Sylvie van Molle (BEL), Caroline Effert (GER) and Maria Liberg (SWE) only finishing one and two shots behind. Campomanes left herself a long two putt for the victory on the last green, which she made safely. Van Molle took home the silver medal for Belgium, whereas Effert came out on top in the race for the bronze medal owing to her excellent round of 73 on the final day against Liberg's 75. In the 60+ age category, Mimmi Guglielmone from Switzerland finished first with a total score of 239.
