German Players Lead with one Round to go at Bogogno Golf Resort

After round two at Bogogno Golf Resort, Italy, German players top the leaderboards of both the European Men’s and Ladies’ Mid-Amateur Championships.

Marian Ludwig (GER) gained the outright lead thanks to a bogey-free round of 67 (-5) in which he hit all 18 of the Conte Course’s greens in regulation. The German, who sits on -6, will take a two-shot lead into the final round ahead of a packed chasing group.

Day 2 Highlights - 2023 European Mid-Amateur Championships

On the ladies’ side, Alena Oppenheimer (GER) is in front. Five birdies and two bogeys totalled 69 (-3) for the lowest round of the day off the ladies’ tees, moving her to -4 for the tournament.

The course conditions were calm and consistent during the whole day. No wind and just a few drops of rain at the end of the day led to 18 rounds under-par for the men and 7 rounds under-par for the women.

Michael Thannhäuser (GER), tied for the lead after Round 1, carded a level-par 72 despite two sevens on the card on day 2. The German sits alongside two French players, Pierre Tillement, who matched the lowest round of the day with a 67 (-2) and Cédric Bertin-Pennarun (72) in a tie for second place. The three players remain well in contention, just two shots back on -4.

Saturday is set to be an exciting final round in the men's event, with 10 players within just four shots of the leader.

On the ladies’ side, Germany’s Alena Oppenheimer also sits alone at the top, with another German as second, Hanne Rieke Gerding, who shot a second round of 71 (-1).

Second place is shared with Belgian, Céline Manche, who also shot a second consecutive round of 71 (-1).

Home favourite Michele Gallini had a rollercoaster round, carding three birdies and two eagles, but still finished with a score of 71 (+1) for the day. He made the cut by four shots and will have another chance to please the home crowd tomorrow.

With the cut line at +11 for the ladies and +6 for the men, the best 57 men and 33 ladies advanced to Saturday’s final round, with 18 holes left to climb up the leaderboard.
