Day 1 - European Amateur Team Championship

The European Amateur Team Championship got underway at the Faldo-designed course at Sporting Club Berlin, Germany today.

96 players representing 16 nations teed off on the first of five days of golf.

The five best stroke play scores out of six for each team on the first two days will decide the top-8 teams that qualify for Flight A and have a chance at winning medals in the subsequent match play stages.

England currently lead the way on a total of 11-under-par, two shots ahead of Sweden who are nine-under. France and Denmark are two shots further back on seven-under par, tied for third, while the Netherlands and Finland are tied for fifth on five-under.

Scotland and Spain occupy seventh and eight place on three-under and two-under par respectively. Ireland, Iceland, and Germany are all within two shots of eight place, and will be hoping to improve their scores tomorrow in order to qualify for the medal contention matches.

Gian Marco Petrozzi (pictured) shot a 10-under-par 62, the lowest score of the day. The English player was 11-under-par with just the last hole to play, but a three-putt bogey meant he would settle for tying the course record.

Serbia are represented for the first time in history at the event after a rare withdrawal earlier this year meant their fourth place finish in the Division 2 championship last year was good enough to earn them a place.
