Bronte Law, England, was the strongest sprinter in the final race in the European Ladies’ Amateur Championship at Hooks Golf Club, Sweden. She secured her second trophy and gold medal in a European Championship this summer after having won the European Ladies’ Amateur Team Championship with England only two weeks ago!
Law was seven strokes off the lead going into the final round and initiated a chase that would lead her all the way to the top. Law showed her strength early in the tournament, when she posted a score of 65 in the first round and was in second place. After recording scores of 76 and 70 on day two and three, she needed a low final round to win. With birdies on the 3rd, 6th and 8th and a bogey on the 4th hole, Law was two-under at the turn. A birdie on hole 10 and a superb eagle on the following hole saw her moving closer to the leader. After a dropped shot on hole 12, birdies on the 14th and 18th were vital to secure the title with a final round of 66.
Belgian Leslie Cloots teed off in the final group with a three-stroke lead ahead of Sweden’s Lisa Pettersson. Cloots started solid with six pars in a row and went on to bogey hole 7, birdie the 8th and drop again a shot on the 9th. After a bogey on hole 15 her lead vanished and a birdie on 16 should take her onto the top of the leaderboard again. However, what she did not know then, Law sunk her birdie putt on the final hole at the same time, so Law and Cloots both moved to 11-under-par. Bogey on the par-3 17th saw her one shot behind Law on the 18th tee. After her tee shot down the middle of the fairway and a good shot into the green, the missed birdie putt thwarted her chances to force Law into a playoff.
With six birdies Olivia Mehaffey, Ireland, also started an impressive catch-up race. Posting a final score of 68 she secured third place and the bronze medal with a total of -9, two strokes behind Law.
The final round’s best score, 64, was posted by Swedish player Linnéa Ström who also impressed with an albatross on hole 3.
Unsurprisingly, Law was very happy with her game:
”I had a solid game and the irons felt really good this week. It’s been quite an intense summer. Two weeks ago we won the European Ladies’ Amateur Team Championship together, and now I’ve won the Individual Championship. I am also very happy about the victory in the Curtis Cup”, said the 21-year-old player from Stockport south of Manchester.
